There are two things that can go far in determining the value of a vintage guitar. First, always be sure to check and research the serial number on te guitar and reference it with a good buying guide or reference book.
Second, pick a time span and a particular kind of guitar and start researching until you know what is good and bad in that market. Magazines like vintage guitar and others can get you started but also go to buying guides online. The most important aspect of any collection is to buy what you trully love and enjoy. This will give you the desire and curiosity to do the research you need to make an informed decision.
What are the most collectable vintage Martin’s?
The best can be summed up as follows: Twelve and fourteen fret steel string models from the mid 1920’s to 1944 are the most collectible of all Martin instruments. Some musicians prefer the sound and feel of 12 fret models, and these are close in value to 14 fret models of the same size and period. They have excellent craftsmenship, sound, and playability, and these model are of great interest to collectors and players.
Many believe that the larger size 14 fret 000 and “D” sizes from the 1930’s represent the golden era of the flat top Martin. Note war-time models (1941 to 1944) aren’t quite as desirable as the 1930’s models. Lack of materials, manpower, and general social uncertainty during the war contributed to this.
These are some of the hottest vintage guitars in the $4,000 -$5,000 range and some say one of the best choices for 6-string acoustic fingerstyle blues guitars. Increases in value has been substantial over the past year and I believe it will continue to rise. Just be sure to stay clear of dealers catering to the affluent crowd who have more money then they know how to spend! These steady risers will be a great investment going forward.
Some think these are among the best 12 strings made and I agree. They are rapidly rising in price over the past year or so and now range from around $700 – $1000 for guitars made in the late 70’s and1960 era vintage guitars going in the $2000 range. This is a reported 100 percent increase in the past year alone. Worth checking into.
